The Measure: A Novel

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - The Read With Jenna Today Show Book Club Pick!

"A story of love and hope as interweaving characters display: how all moments, big and small, can measure a life. If you want joy, love, romance, and hope--read with us." --Jenna Bush Hager

A luminous, spirit-lifting blockbuster that asks: would you choose to find out the length of your life?

Eight ordinary people. One extraordinary choice.

It seems like any other day. You wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and head out.

But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live.

From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?

As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they'll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge?

The Measure charts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose decisions and fates interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown, a couple who thought they didn't have to rush, a doctor who cannot save himself, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything.

Enchanting and deeply uplifting, The Measure is a sweeping, ambitious, and invigorating story about family, friendship, hope, and destiny that encourages us to live life to the fullest.

I wavered between 4 and 5 stars, but obviously went with 5. I was lucky enough to have been given this book for a Christmas present, and it's reinforced some of the feelings I've had. When everyone over 21 is given a box that holds a string that shows the measure of their life, the world changes. I think the author does a fairly accurate job of predicting human nature. Short stringers are discriminated against. People don't want to hire them or date them. Some of the short stringers act out - in great part BECAUSE of the discrimination - and the US turns against them in great part. Never mind that someone's string might be short because they died while saving someone else, or that someone may have a long string lifespan but be in a coma for years after they did something reckless knowing that they could not die. We learn lessons, we see people choose to not open their box, or laws that require people to open their box. In the end, we learn what really is the measure of a life, and it's not the length of time we spend on earth.

3.6 out of 5 from our book club. We loved the characters and how they all intertwined with one another’s lives. We found the characters interesting and relatable. The author did a great job of introducing them and building their individual stories. We loved the fluctuations in emotions - we were happy, sad, and mad at different times. Some of us didn’t like the intensity, anxiety-ridden plot lines. This book sparked some great conversation. 4 out of 7 said they wouldn’t open their box, 3 out of 7 said they would open their box.
